NNon-invasive iron overload treatment

Thalas Full Liver Susceptometer
Non-invasive measurement of the iron overload in the human body

Patients suffering from Cooley's anemia (Thalassemia major) need frequent blood transfusions. Iron, contained in transfused red cells, accumulates with toxic effects to the patient. The Thalas susceptometer measures the magnetic susceptibility of the human body and obtains a quantitative measurement of the iron overload.

Quantitative assessment of body-iron accumulation is essential for managing therapy of iron-chelating diseases characterized by iron overload such as thalassemia, hereditary hemochromatosis, and other forms of severe anemia.

The Thalas susceptometer is presently being used in the measurement of iron overloads in thalassemic patients at the Galliera Hospital in Genova, Italy.
